Toronto FC announced Tuesday that they have acquired allocation money from expansion side Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for defender Tyrone Marshall. As per league and team policy, details of the deal were not announced.
“Tyrone is a veteran of this league and we wish him all the best,” said manager, director of soccer Mo Johnston. “We are sad to see him go, trades are always difficult but in the long run we feel we have made another move to improve our team.”
Marshall, 34, joined Toronto FC in a trade with the LA Galaxy on June 13, 2007 that sent forward Edson Buddle to the west coast. The defender appeared in 40 games with Toronto logging 3,459 minutes. This is the Jamaican International’s 11th season in Major League Soccer having made previous stops in Colorado, Miami and Los Angeles.
Chicago vs TFC 1:0
Toronto FC were beaten 1-0 by Chicago Fire in preseason action in Bradenton, Florida on Tuesday morning. Mike Banner scored the only goal of the game for Chicago in the 41st minute.
Toronto had the best chance in the early stages of the game. In the 7th minute, Chad Barrett carried the ball from midfield but his fierce strike blazed over the bar. Two minutes later, Barrett’s strike partner Dwayne De Rosario took a hard shot to the leg and needed time to recover but he was able to continue in the game.
De Rosario fed Johann Smith in 20th minute and Smith carved out a good goal scoring opportunity for himself. After a good run down the left, he escaped a challenge from Fire defender Roland Paul Bebey Kingue and raced into the box, but his shot rolled far wide of the right post. Soon after, Fire keeper Nick Noble smothered a shot from Chad Barrett to keep the game 0-0.
Five minutes before half time, Greg Sutton produced a good save to keep out Stefan Dimitrov, but he couldn’t stop a free kick from Mike Banner a few seconds later which flew into the top left corner of the goal. That goal stood up as the game winner.
Both teams made a number of substitutions in the second half, and Danny Dichio almost made an immediate impact for TFC. He came into the game on the hour mark, and five minutes later Dichio sent a back heel pass into the path of Sam Cronin. His shot was saved by Fire keeper Andrew Dykstra.
Toronto couldn’t find a way to get back into the game and fell to a 1-0 defeat. The Reds opened preseason with a 2-1 win against the U.S. Under 20s on Sunday and will wrap up their week in Bradenton with a game against the New York Red Bulls on Friday.
