Battle to second consecutive 1-1 all draw in London

LONDON, ON — The Toronto Lady Lynx and the London Gryphons battled to their second consecutive 1-all draw at North London Stadium in London. Bryana McCarthy scored early for the Lady Lynx to give the team a quick 1-0 lead, but the team again was unable to hold the lead. A second-half strike by the Gryphons evened the match and the two squads split the points. Toronto remains atop the Great Lakes division with 5 points (1-0-2), while the Gryphons improve to 0-0-2 (2 points) on the season, and remain in third place. The two teams split their season series with a pair of ties in their two meetings.

For the second time in three games, McCarthy scored in the first minute of the match to give Toronto an early 1-0 lead. Kayla Afonso started the play with a long run down the far touch line, and crossed the ball into the box. McCarthy met the ball in full stride and slammed it into the top corner for her second goal of the young season. The Lady Lynx continued to press throughout the first half, but could not convert their chances on the wet pitch and took their one-goal into the locker room at the break.

As was the case on Saturday evening in Toronto, London levelled the match shortly after the start of the second half. Devon Beach again found the net to draw the Gryphons even at one in the 56th minute when she walked into the box and shot the ball into the top corner past Justine Bernier in the Lady Lynx goal.

Neither team was able to generate much offense throughout the remainder of the frame, with both squads unable to create many chances and establish a flow to the game. The hosts pressed forward as time ran down, but the strong Lady Lynx defense was able to hold and the game ended deadlocked at one.

The Lady Lynx return home next Sunday, May 31 at 4:00 PM versus the Rochester Ravens at Oshawa Civic Stadium on Celebrating Durham Women in Soccer Day. Tickets for the match may be purchased by calling the Lynx ticket hotline at 416-251-4625 x 31, or at the Oshawa Civic Stadium box office one hour prior to kickoff.
