Japanese Stifle Nigerians and Play for Draw

Owning the penthouse suite has its advantages. Heading into Saturday’s Group F final match, both Japan and Nigeria held equal records of two victories without defeat. Japan held an advantage in the first tie-breaker by scoring 4 goals to Nigeria’s 3.
With both teams already clinching spots into the group of 16, coaches Yoshida (Japan) and Bosso (Nigeria) played their benches. Though most of the regulars were sitting, the subs that competed in this match provided an entertaining match. The experiences gained by these players may prove to be valuable assets for both teams as they advance in the tournament.
Nigeria continued to play their free flow style of game with quick short passes. While Scotland and Costa Rican defenders gave space for the Nigerians to manoeuvre, the Japanese used their speed to close down the Nigerians defensively and make them play long balls from the back line. Though this strategy would work early for Nigeria, it would be the crafty play of Brown Ideye and captain Ezekiel Bala that would highlight the show.
