Edmonton SWU wins gold over Russell at U14 Canadian Futsal Finals
The Canadian U14 Futsal Championships have proven to be very competitive. At the end of the first day, all 8 teams still had a mathematical chance of making the finals on Sunday afternoon. The final qualifying game for each team on Sunday morning would determine who would play for gold and silver.
Boys Action Edmonton SWU defeated Langley United 4-1. Richmond Madrid prevailed over Glen Shields Reds by a score of 7-5. The results of these two games guaranteed an all BC final.
Girls Play Russell needed a win or tie to clinch its spot in the finals — a loss would still give them a chance to qualify on goal difference.
It didn’t take too long for Russell to strike. Forty seconds into the game defender Shelby Raven made a run to the net and blasted a pass from Megan Klimas past the NS Reign keeper. A minute later, Robyn Reginald’s free kick evened the score.
Despite the two early goals, this game turned out to be the lowest scoring game of the tournament. The only other goal of the game was scored in the dying seconds of the first half, as Reginald scored to lead her team to a 2-1 victory. The low scoring game guaranteed Russell’s place in the finals.
In the second game of the morning, Edmonton needed a tie or a win to advance. The North Shore Snipers required a victory. SWU overcame the Snipers by 4-1 and the best any BC team could do would be to win the bronze medal.
Girls Final Early in the second half, Victoria Saccomani of SWU struck for two goals in less then a minute to give Edmonton a 2-0 lead. At the ten minute mark, Emily Adamic put SWU up 3-0. Russell got back into the game as a corner kick by Sara Bennett deflected into the net off the head of Alyssa Vanderlinden. With one minute remaining, Russell was awarded a penalty kick, but failed to score.
