A long suffering fan of Canadian soccer since 1971 when I started
attending games of the Montreal Olympique of the pre-Pelé NASL.
BRIEFS
Canadian Teams and Players in Action
National Teams
Canada’s Women’s Team opens World Cup action against the powerful team from Norway on Wednesday. The results at this tournament will define Even Pellerud’s stint as National Team head coach. Pellerud has an uneven record, with success at the last World Cup and then failing to qualify for the Olympics.
Many Canadian observers have critized Pellerud for the negative style of soccer employed by the team. The team has been together since January preparing for the World Cup. Pellerud is expected to step down as coach after the games.
The Men’s team will play their first game in Toronto in seven years. Canada’s opposition is Costa Rica, the team Canada will have to edge out if they hope to qualify for the World Cup in 2010. World Cup qualifying starts in 2008.
MLS
With his second 2-goal performance of the week Luciano Emilio boosted his league leading total to 18. Emilio could become the first MLS player to score 20 goals or more in a season since 2002. In 2002 Carlos Ruiz netted 24, while Taylor Twellman was a close second with 23. The All-time MLS record is held by Roy Lassiter with 27 goals in 1996.
Los Angeles playing without Beckham and Landon Donovan picked up their first league victory in nine games. Donovan played with the USA national team in a 4-2 loss to Brazil in an International Friendly.
Chicago’s mid-season signings Paulo Wanchope and Wilman Conde combined for the only goal of the game in the Fire’s 1-0 win.
Toronto FC have now gone 732 minutes without a goal. However it wasn’t for the lack of chances. A lack of finishing ability hurt Toronto as Dallas converted 2 penalty kicks for the 2-0 win. Brazilian Denilson scored his first goal in MLS.
USL-1
Montreal fell short in their attempt at first place with a 2-0 loss in Rochester. Seattle’s 1-0 victory over Minnesota gives them the league Championship with Portland coming in second. Vancouver finished 7th and will meet Portland in one of the quarter-finals.
Charles Gbeke of Montreal and Sebaastian Le Toux of Seattle finished tied at 10 for the league scoring title.
CSL
Serbian White Eagles, St Catharines Wolves, Italia Shooters and Toronto Croatia have all qualified for the playoffs after weekend action. The White Eagles have taken over first overall in the league. Toronto Croatia remains the only undefeated team with a
record of 8 wins and 8 ties. Teams in the CSL play a 22 game schedule.
